Water Leak Repair in Houston

Once the leak is located, the repair depends on what is leaking and where it sits. A pinhole in accessible copper is a short job. A break under a slab or in a yard line involves getting to the pipe first, which is most of the work.

Types of leak repair

Accessible pipe leak

Under a sink, in a garage wall, in the attic. Cut out the failed section and repair the run.

In wall leak

Requires opening drywall at the leak. Ask what will be opened and who patches it.

Yard or service line leak

Between the meter and the house. Usually excavation at the break.

Under slab leak

Repair through the slab, or reroute the line overhead to avoid opening the floor.

Repair or reroute

For a slab leak, there are usually two paths. Open the floor at the leak and repair the pipe in place, or abandon that section and run new pipe through walls and the attic. Repair in place is less disruptive to the rest of the house. Rerouting avoids breaking concrete and takes an aging line out of the slab.

Which one fits depends on the pipe material, how many leaks that run has already had, and what is on top of the floor. Tile and hardwood change the calculation.

After the repair

Get the water back on and watch the meter again to confirm the leak is gone

Deal with wet building materials quickly, since Houston humidity does not help them dry

Keep photos and documentation for insurance

Ask whether the rest of that pipe run is in similar condition

Questions people ask us

How urgent is a small pipe leak?

More urgent than it looks. A slow leak inside a wall or under a slab keeps wetting materials that do not dry in this climate, and the repair cost rarely changes while you wait. The damage does.

Will my insurance cover it?

That depends entirely on your policy and the cause, and this site cannot answer it for you. What helps is documentation. Photograph the damage before work starts, keep the invoice, and ask the plumber to note the cause and location on it.

Can a leaking pipe be patched instead of replaced?

A single failure in otherwise sound pipe is repaired at that spot. Repeated failures along one run usually mean the pipe material is at the end of its usable life, and a repipe of that run costs less than a series of separate repairs.
