Sewer Camera Inspection in Houston
Sewer Camera Inspection in Houston
A camera inspection answers the question that clearing a line cannot: why did it block, and what shape is the pipe in. It is the step that should come before any quote involving excavation.
When an inspection earns its cost
The same line has backed up more than once
Someone has proposed digging or replacing a line
You are buying a home with mature trees or an older sewer line
Multiple fixtures are slow and nobody can say why
There is a sewer smell outside with no visible cause
You want to know the pipe material and condition before a remodel
When clearing the line is enough
A camera is not the answer to every blocked drain, and it is worth saying so. A single fixture that backs up once, clears normally and stays clear afterwards does not need one. Neither does a kitchen line that clogged with grease and has since been cleaned properly. If water is not moving right now, the useful first step is clearing the line.
What changes the answer is repetition. The same drain backing up every few weeks after being cleared is the line telling you that clearing it opened a channel through the problem rather than removing it. That is the point at which looking inside earns its cost, and it is also the point at which anyone proposing to dig should be able to show you why.
What it can show
Roots entering at a joint, and how far in they go
Offset or separated joints
Corrosion and scaling inside cast iron
A sagging section holding water
Cracks, holes and collapsed pipe
Debris and buildup along the pipe wall
The approximate depth and position of a problem area
Ask for the footage
You are paying to see inside your own pipe, so ask for the recording and for the located position of anything that matters. If a repair is recommended, the footage is what lets you get a meaningful second opinion instead of comparing two prices for unknown work.
Before the inspection
The line usually needs to be cleared enough for the camera to travel, so an inspection is often paired with cleaning. Access matters too, since a cleanout makes this straightforward and a property without one takes longer.
Questions people ask us
Is a camera inspection worth it before buying a house?
On an older property with mature trees, it is one of the more useful inspections available, because sewer line replacement is expensive and a standard home inspection does not look inside the pipe. You are buying information about a system you cannot otherwise see.
Can a camera find a water leak?
No. A sewer camera travels inside drain lines. Pressurized water supply lines are too small and are not accessible that way, so a suspected supply leak is a leak detection job instead.
